Sajou 4.5" Imitation Mother-of-Pearl Embroidery Scissors — Swan (Private Collection)
Maison Sajou Private Collection | Made in France
From the Maison Sajou Private Collection — designed by Frédérique Crestin-Billet — the Swan scissors are one of the most breathtaking pieces in the world of embroidery. The handles are sculpted in the form of two graceful swans, back to back, rendered in luminous imitation mother-of-pearl: a material deeply rooted in the history of fine French needlework accessories and inspired by the decorative elegance of the Charles X era (1820–1830).
Despite their delicate, jewel-like appearance, these scissors are a genuine working tool — lightweight, beautifully balanced, and sharp to the very tip. The imitation mother-of-pearl handles are made from cellulose acetate, a material that faithfully captures the luminous quality of the original while being more durable and lighter to hold. The more they are used, the more they settle into the hand.
Each pair carries pairing marks on the interior of the blades — engraved numbers confirming that the two blades were matched from the very first stage of production, then separated for finishing before being reunited. It takes no fewer than twelve skilled craftspeople to bring a single pair to completion. Entirely made in France, including the pompom.
