Tips for Getting It Right

1
Where to find your stitch count: Look on your chart cover or first page for something like "Design size: 140w × 200h" or "140 × 200 stitches." If it's not listed, count the grid squares across and down — they're usually marked in groups of 10.
2
Aida vs. linen count: A 14-count Aida has 14 stitches per inch. A 28-count linen has 28 threads per inch — but you stitch over 2 threads, so it's also 14 stitches per inch. That's why 28-count linen over 2 gives the same design size as 14-count Aida.
3
When in doubt, cut bigger. You can always trim excess fabric, but you can't add more once you've started stitching. A 3-inch margin on each side is the safe standard; use 4 inches if you plan to frame the piece professionally.
4
Higher count = smaller stitches: The same 200-stitch design will be about 14 inches wide on 14-count Aida but only about 11 inches wide on 18-count. Use the comparison table above to find the size that works best for your project and eyesight.
5
Needle size matters: Using the right needle prevents snagging and makes each stitch slide through cleanly. The calculator suggests a needle size based on your fabric count, but every stitcher has personal preferences — trust your hands.
6
Our fabric is sold by the quarter, half, and full yard. The calculator recommends the smallest size that fits your project. Quarter yards are approximately 16″ × 27″, half yards about 27″ × 34″, and full yards about 34″ × 54″. Exact dimensions vary by brand and fabric type.
